Pete
Way's voice sounds as good as it can sound on this; even better than on
Amphetamine (kudos again to Patlan) and the songs are mostly quite good.
About half of them are Pete Way pub rock romps, which are all chug-chug-chug
and alot of fun. The rest are a collection of true blue heart-on-your
sleeve/heart-of-pain numbers, and I love them all.
Favorites so far are Take Another Shot, Senorita, and Miss You Tonight.
Really good songs in the Pete Way style, sacrificing spit and polish for
blood and tears. And it seems like I can't turn the volume up enough.
As
for Mikey, the best guitar playing is probably on Senorita. For the most
part, he does just enough to serve the song and then stays out of the
"way"; clearly he treated it as a Pete Way solo record and played
a respectfully supporting role. On some of the tunes I got the sense that
MS was almost copping an Amphetamine style to get the right vibe for Pete's
singing and songwriting. Most of the leads he takes are looser and not
as worked out as most of what Schenker likes to put on his own records.
My take is that it totally works and Schenker caught it just about perfectly
without diminshing or upstaging what Pete was trying to do with his songs.
None of these tunes would have sounded anywhere near this good, though,
without that full throated flying V backing Pete up, chug-chug-chugging
through the changes...
